The Luftschutz Helmet first appeared in 1938 and were worn by wardens and teams of the Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB), National Air Raid Protection League. The RLB was an organization in Nazi Germany in charge of air raid precautions in residential areas and among smaller businesses. Some of their tasks included extinguishing fires, rescuing survivors and clearing debris after air raids. In 1938 the Reichsluftschutzbund was transformed into the Luftschutz (LS) and in 1943 it changed from a voluntary service to a compulsory one which included women. The production of the Luftschutz, also known as Gladiator Helmets, ceased when in 1940 substandard factory rejects of the military issue helmet were used. The reclassified M1935/40 helmets were deemed as acceptable for home front personnel.
This helmet is offered in restored condition. It has been repainted (outside, but not inside) with new insignia. Original steel helmet, liner, and chinstrap present (chinstrap has been severed but reaches the buckle and displays well) Amazing overall patina. Heat stamped RL2-38/28 inside. This helmet measures 25 inches around the sweatband area (measurement shown in photos) Some dents and dings customary with use.
