Fantastic pattern 1872 Spanish American War era rigid shell kepi. Characteristics that define this version are sturdier construction and a leather banding around the crown. This fine example dates from the end of the 19th century and belonged to a member of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, as identified by the insignia on the front.

The cap is in great condition for being well over a century old. The beaver felt is solid with typical signs of age and use. Visor is in good shape without separation and the black leather sweatband is present and solid. The cap measures 24 Inches around outer sweatband era (as shown in photos) The interior has a paper label for Horstmann & Bros. Philadelphia.
