Vintage Piece / 1926 “1st Place” German swimming competition pendant medal. The medal is shaped like an imperial eagle (with a swimming cap) and has the inscription "GEFALLENEN-GEDÄCHTNIS- SCHWIMΜΕΝ 28.2.1926 I. PREIS B.S.S.V." on it. This translates to "Fallen Memory Swim, 2/28/1926, 1st Prize, B.S.S.V." The "B.S.S.V." stands for a swimming association of the time. The medal was awarded for first prize at a memorial swimming event held on February 28, 1926. It has a composition of .900 solid silver and maker-hallmarked “Shmidt”
In 1926 (same year) Gertrude Ederle a German women and daughter of a local butcher became the first woman to swim the English Channel so swimming competitions were very popular at this time.
